Buying a car is one of the most important and big decisions in life for many people. The moment should be full of happiness, but sometimes it proves to sour without you even being at fault. Some dealers often find difficulty with clearing their stocks so they sell an old car as new which leaves buyers unable to realize what has happened until after making payment when things are too late. I this scenario, you might be thinking how do I find the production date of my vehicle?

Many times, fraud dealers and thieves will forge papers to sell old and stolen cars as sparingly used cars. Here are some quick tips on how you can avoid falling for such a trap: First of all; understand that the VIN number isn’t too difficult to decode if you know what it is supposed to look like in the first place! The manufacturing date stamp inside your car gives its make-and-model year, so by decoding the VIN number, you can find the production date of your vehicle.

1. The VIN of a vehicle is unique and personal to every car owner, just like a Credit Card Number. The number can be up to 19 digits long - the length depends on which year it was manufactured in.

2. The VIN is a code that contains numbers and letters. You can't decode just by looking at it.  Look for the 10th digit of the VIN number. It represents the year.

3. Car companies split the month and year of manufacturing into English alphabets. For example, 'A' is used for 2010 while ‘Y’ denotes 2030. It has to be kept in mind that letters I O Q are not used in VIN numbers.
