The Pros and Cons of Electric Cars

by Scott HuntJuly 26, 2021,

“As technology advances to new highs, the term electric car has reached the mainstream with more affordable options to choose from. Electric cars can be a great way to save a lot of money on gas, but there are numerous reasons why electric cars can be beneficial.”  (Harriet Chan)

With all the rage of electric cars soon hitting the mainstream market and saving our environment, let’s see what the experts say about the advantages and disadvantages of Electric Cars.

Pros: Convenient, Easy to Recharge, Low-Maintenance

“Electric cars are more convenient, easy to recharge, and offer simplified charging systems in which one can charge their vehicles at home without requiring any high-end infrastructure. As electric cars run on a clean energy source, they do not emit any toxic gases which makes them eco-friendly.

“The major advantage of electric cars is that they have low maintenance needs since the entire engine is run by electricity there are fewer moving parts, which means the operation is quiet.”

Cons: Recharge Points are Few, Battery Issues

“Although the evidence of benefits has become clear, there are also some cons associated with electric cars. One of the major disadvantages of electric cars is recharge points. Electric recharge points are still under the development process and yet to advance more, until charging stations are widespread it is still hard to own an electric car.

“Another disadvantage of an electric car is the replacement of batteries, electric cars run with the support of batteries and these batteries do not sustain in the long run and need replacement. These replacements can be frequent and cost-effective.”

Pros: Environmental Friendly, Noiseless, Efficient, Simple

“Low Environmental Pollution: Electric vehicles do not produce exhaust gas during use, and there is no air pollution problem compared with classic cars.

“No Noise, Low Noise: It is quiet during driving and is especially suitable for driving on urban roads that reduce noise pollution.

“High Efficiency: When using an electric vehicle, when decelerating and stopping, the car's kinetic energy can be regenerated into electrical power through the magnetoelectric effect and stored in a battery or other energy storage device. In this way,  there is no need to let the motor idling when parking, which can significantly improve energy use efficiency and reduce air pollution.”

“Simple structure, convenient use, and maintenance, durable Electric cars are easy to manipulate, simple in design, relatively few running transmission parts, no need to change oil, oil pump, muffler, etc., and no need to add cooling water. The maintenance workload is small.”

Cons: Cruising Range, Charging Time, Price, Slow

“Scope anxiety: In the early days of electric vehicles, the distance that the car can travel on a single charge (called the cruising range) is much lower than the distance we used to use gasoline or diesel cars.

“Charging time: Charging a car is not as fast as filling up gasoline. The time varies from car to car, and also to the power of the charger. Using a 7kW charger, it takes four hours to charge the Nissan Leaf 30kWh from empty.

“Price:  It is an unavoidable fact that electric vehicles are more expensive than traditional gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.

“Driving Pleasure: Because of their batteries, electric cars are much heavier than gasoline or diesel equivalents. Although rapid acceleration is found in some models (such as the Tesla Model S), it usually feels heavy at corners and slow to change direction, eliminating driving pleasure or satisfaction.”

Pros: No Fuel, Good For Environment, Reduced Maintenance

“No Gas: The biggest upside of an electric car is it doesn’t require any kind of gas or fuel to run. It can save the number of bucks you spend on fuel per day. According to one survey, the average American spends between $2,500 to $4,000 on gas every year.

“Saves Environment: Electric Cars are not only beneficial to humans, but they also do a favor for the environment. Most of the automated cars are electric ones, so they save the environment from pollution caused by diesel or petrol cars.

“Reduces Maintenance: Electric Cars don’t require any kind of engine oil, strange right? So no more changing engine oil periodically. It contains very few mechanical moving parts so it eliminates costly maintenance.”

Cons: Shorter-Range, Few Charging Stations, Machine Error

“Shorter-Range: The biggest drawback of electric cars is they have a shorter range than gasoline cars. Usually, electric cars get to travel up to 100 – 120 miles on a full charge, and traditional cars can make up to 400 miles which is quite higher than electric cars.

“Difficult to Find a Charging Station: Electric Cars are not yet popular and owned by many people in the country, so there are limited charging stations. Charging stations are only available in some cities. But this is not the permanent downside of an electric vehicle.

“Machine Error: Machine error is another downside of electric cars. These cars can prevent the risk of accidents but they cannot completely eliminate these risks caused by machine error. The accidents caused by machine errors can be more severe and dangerous.”
